Topic 5

Topic 5:  You have almost completed this semester, so, how do you view Critical Literacy now? If you have any comments and suggestions. Please do so as it helps for the betterment of the course as a whole.

After having through 12 week in learning Critical Literacy subject. In my opinion, Critical Literacy is a subject that encourage us to think a lot and think critically. As a semester 4 students, I do agreed that this subject should to be compulsory to other batches. This subject teach a lot of how we think in particular matter. Doing a lot of exercise and have a revision helps to gain knowledge in mastering the rule of 10 and others. From what I have learned, in critical literacy subject we just can’t simply take an evidence from anonymous.

Therefore, beside as a student and as a teenager the critical literacy subject teach me of how to evaluate the news that’s haven’t confirm whether it is a rumors and others. However, as a new generation we should have to think critically ad clearly before make any judgments. It help us prevent from posting negative post in our media social.

I would like to suggest that every students of Diploma in English Communication should have to study this subject and I hope that there are a lot of exercises to students that can help us improve ourselves in this subject.

Topic 4

Topic 4: Proposition: Hollywood produces great movies, but they don’t always tell the truth even it is based on “True Stories”. Provide at least two premises or counter arguments for the proposition. Write in complete paragraph (s).

I agree with the premises above that Hollywood produces great movies, but they don’t always tell the truth even it is based on “True Stories”. Mostly movies educate us from the actor or actress action and it show us history, the culture, technology and others. While watching the movies we learn about others people daily life. Therefore, watching movies help us in learning based on visual and gain knowledge. Many of the customs and traditions of different part the world that shown in movies.

Movies inspire us in many ways. Some of the movie are more likely give an impact that teach us about life, love, friendship and so on. For example, the old story such as the victory of war inspire us to be brave no matter what, clever in planning strategies, loyal and other which encourage us to become a positive minded. In addition, movies are most popular entertainment. Most of people nowadays tend to go at cinema and enjoy the movies. Watching movie makes people relax and amused. Sometimes, the audience effected the emotions by the character. Their effort to entertain the audiences is worth and enjoyable.

A true story doesn’t mean it have to be a good ending because of its people change the true story to be a better story line and attract people to watch it. If the movie are based on true story it might makes people unsatisfied with that movie. As an audience, it kind of wasting time and money. Majority of the movies are not likely worth to watching  it as I mentioned before.

Topic 3

Topic 3:  “If money were the only criterion by which a child’s welfare can be gauged, then a baby bought for as much as RM40, 000 on the black market could seem set for life. For money rich but child-poor couples, it is a small price to pay to introduce a small life into their home. The cost is gilded, the blanket monogrammed, the college fund filled to the brim. All that’s wanting is a bun in the oven. And where a baby-for-sale racket, money is can indeed buy happiness. And after all, why not?” (NST, march 3, 2013)

Many couples in this world are trying so hard to have a baby. Not every couple are given that chance. For me, baby is the greatest gift from god to us. The born of baby bring a lot of happiness and also can make us smile with their innocence actions. While having and growing a baby its take a lot of money. But, it is worth because having children teach us how to become a mature parents and be more positive in attitude.

In additional, having baby can affect our financial especially for poor couple who can’t afford to buy their baby needs every month. I am disagree with the statement “And where a baby-for-sale racket, money is can indeed buy happiness. And after all, why not?” In my opinion, baby is not for sales because they are human too. As a human, we can’t be that selfish type of person who willing to sale for rich couple just because lack of money.

Therefore, happiness for me doesn’t need money but to improve the happiness we need money to spend for. What is going to be the dilemma of the baby when they grow up know that they are adopted just because the biological parents have no money at that time? Is that we call it happiness?

As a rich couple there are a lots of way to get a baby instead of buying them. For example, vitro fertilization, the new technology of combining an egg and sperm in a laboratory dish and transfer it into the uterus. 

Topic 2

Topic 2: Stereotyping is exaggerated generalizations associated with a categorizing system, they go beyond the facts at hand and make claims that usually have no valid basis. It is also something that most people fond difficult to avoid from doing. What do you think?

Nowadays, a lot of people tend to spread their own thought since the internet are in our finger tips. Being a stereotyping can be anyone. It might be school kids, teenagers, or anyone else. Until know, to know the truth we have to make a mini research to detect whether that news is truth or not.

Stereotyping is the people in a group who have their own intention to make an assumptions towards others. However, stereotyping can bring advantages. First, stereotyping can be used in making a quick discussion or judgment. For example, if you are asked them to give a respectful, so they will easily get along with it. Second, being a stereotyping helps us to understand them better. We also can tolerate with them in any matter. Third, some of us like to be a stereotype because they want to dress hoe their looks and how they want to be. Therefore, they instantly want them to be judge. It might be of how they walk which is how they like to be.

However, it also give disadvantages. When a stereotype makes a judgment about someone, it might be misunderstanding or incorrect. You might be act differently toward them because they might hurt you.

Besides, the media also give a different look that have changed a person. To get an attention from pubic people, the particular person might be to looks stupid although the reality they are not. Some people might assume that they are sharing the same ideas such as the way they dress sense, culture or their tastes. Just because they look the same doesn't mean they have to feel the same ways. The saying of “Don’t judge a book by its cover” shown that appearances isn't enough to judge people until we judge them after get close with them.

I think that everyone should have their own right to be who they want to be. We have our own life since this life is once. We won’t wake up for twice. As long as, what they are doing is still on the right track. There nothing wrong to give them that kind of freedom. 

Topic 1

You heard comments and maybe grievances from your senior about Critical Literacy, but what is/are your expectation (s) or hope for this subject as you are just started.

Critical literacy is the subject that well known for me as a Decomer’s. I have heard about Critical Literacy since I was in semester 3. One of my friend, which is a past senior have told me that Critical Literacy is the one of killer subject. Therefore, I keep thinking of how I will facing this subject in the next semester which is now.  

On my first day of Critical Literacy class, I was clueless at first because what is my mind blowing is not that hard enough as critical thinker. I remembered on my first class with Madam Zariati, me and my classmates  have been given a task to choose a leader as we have to pretend that we don’t know that persons. The picture shown Mahatma Gandhi and Adolf Hitler. I am the only one who choose Mahatma Gandhi as a leader because of his look. Unfortunately, nobody was agreed with me because they prefer to look at the appearance of Adolf Hitler. Since now, I have thought that this subject need more focuses in classes and you must to have a better understanding while learning this subject.

To be honest, no matter how hard this subject is. You need to keep focus when your lecturer is teaching and don’t forget to take down notes in her slides because for me, it is helpful in facing your test or quiz. My expectation for this subject is Critical Literacy is the subject can let me down and all I can do to get better score in this subject is nothing. In the reality is, you have to work hard. I genuinely agree with the stricture of Madam Zariati in teaching and marking my assignments and others. From that, I have to work harder and struggle in this subject.  

For the conclusion, I hope that this subject will still ongoing since every Decomer’s should have to improve their critical thinking in this subject. This subject strongly improving students in thinking beyond.
